"When you participate in a swimrun you push yourself to your limits, you have fun with others that share the same passion as you, and at the same time you discover unique places. First comes the experience, then we look at our stopwatch. "
"Diego, tell us in two words, what is swimrun?"
What is swimrun? Swimrun is swimming-running-swimming-running in alternating fractions with no change of your equipment (you run in your wet suit, you swim in your running shoes).
It was born in Sweden from an 'alcoholic bet', when some friends challenged each other to run and swim from point 'A' to point 'B'. In 2006 Michael Lemmel and Mats Skott discovered this unusual sport and made it into a commercial event. The first two years only few teams showed up. Then that changed when the teams realized that the only way to make it successfully to the end was to run non-stop.
In 2011 the race was named Otillo and today Otillo is recognized internationally as the swimrun world championship. It has been classified by CNN as one of the most strenuous races in the world.
'Ladies and Gentlemen, this is how swimrun became a sport'!
Otillo is for Swimrun just like how Kona is for Ironman.
Otillo's route is 75km long, which includes 65km of running (divided in 31 fractions) and 10km of swimming (divided in 22 fractions) as you pass through 26 islands. I did it twice! What an amazing experience it was!
In just a few years swimrun's growth became the fastest among all the endurance sports (there were 80 races in 2016, last year they got up over 500 in 37 countries!).
So, you never change shoes or outfit, you swim and you run non-stop in alternating fractions (which, by the way, don't have a standard length), you just follow the territory by swimming when you find water and running when you are on the land. It's pure adaptation, you embrace the race until the end forgetting to check your time.
Guys, this is true freedom!"
"Wait, there is no transition area?"
"Nope! You start and you finish with the same equipment: swimrun shoes, leotard or, if it's cold, a wet suit, palette, pull buoy, swim cap, and googles. In some fractions of the race you can decide to untie and also remove the upper part of your suit, however, without stopping."
